If there is a much cheaper flight into MAN, from what I remember there is a direct train service that is very comfortable and fast between Manchester airport and EDI.
Also, if you fly into LHR and can get to Euston Station there are trains that I think take less than 5 hours to get to city center Edinburg, and its a beautiful ride in again, a comfortable train.
Secondary cities in the UK have become hideously expensive lately -- particularly on UA. I would go with the LHR option -- take the Heathrow Express to Paddington - go upstairs and take a quick taxi to Euston. The train ride is very relaxing and pleasant -- especially after a long red-eye over... LH has for years been stingy on the inventory they offer to UA -- I always ran into this trying to get to BAH...
