Google flights shows a $5k flight (SFO-FRA-EDI, LHR-SFO), but the FRA-EDI flight in unavailable on ua.com (it is available to book separately as a one-way trip on Lufthansa).
Looks like my best option is to book SFO-FRA, LHR-SFO and get a separate ticket FRA-EDI (with the usual caveats re: impacts due to any delays).
I’d take a look at transiting through DUB. I’ve seen great bargains for J fares on United flying to DUB. It means switching carriers—maybe even a low cost carrier to EDI; I believe EI flies to EDI.
I’m personally not a big fan of DUB, but on the plus side, it has preclearance on your return from LHR.
