The 5k must be hit or miss. I'm seeing $78 DD/$98 regular fares going for 20k. Those rates are what make me think the points are practically useless. Some years ago I went to Costa Rica on miles and taxes. Miles I earned over 4 something years of flights got me 2 round trip tickets. They really weren't a huge amount if bought cash but I was happy considering I never thought I'd get anything out of them.
I think the most recent round of 5K awards was a somewhat poorly marketed award sale. After I had already booked, I saw where someone on the FB Go-Wild group posted the flyer -- think it was book by 4/8 fly by mid-May, maybe. Something like that.
Funny, there were a lot of comments in that post about never thinking to look at booking with miles on Frontier. (They mostly talk about the Go Wild pass.) And with the switch to revenue based earning, which doesn't get you many miles, it seems that the number of Frontier miles in circulation is bound to decrease.
