One of the things I have done is saved all of my UA miles from when I was a UA3 for upgrading. I also have set my idine account up for UA. I get enough US miles with all the bonuses and so on and like to / have to fly UA sometimes so I have them for upgrades. Used it last summer to get out of a last-row middle when I misconnected in ORD.
