I think it has less to do with the price you paid / price of the flight today / difference in price when you bought your flights / any of those, and more to do with being a flat 50€ offer. Some people, who perhaps would prefer an alternative flight to the one they booked, or indeed who can no longer make their flight as planned, may be tempted by the offer.
