Don't have much time to post a comprehensive reply, but as for the sunrise watching from Haleakala, you'd have to plan to get up VERY early, like 3 a.m. to make it up in time for the sunrise. I've done it before, but I would have rather stayed in one of the cabins up there (which get booked months in advance) rather than making the drive out there. Just a quick note.
