I’ve lived in Asia for the last 20 years and I don’t think there has been a single time when a hotel would not ask for my passport or ID card (if domestic).

They are even getting strict about who is paying for the room. Last time at Sheraton Macau, even though I was one of the guests, my friend wanted to pay with his credit card and I gave him the cash. The Club Lounge Manager really pushed back saying this wasn’t allowed. I asked what the difference would be if I paid with cash and how would they know whether it was my cash or cash from my friend etc. That was silly! I also had a long chat with the Guest Experience Manager at the new W Macao and she said they even carefully checked that the member stayed for the whole stay as there were too many cases where people would sell their rooms and benefits, check in with them then simply leave the hotel. They are trying to clamp down on this too. Sometimes, like insisting the member uses their credit card, is going a bit far but you need to be aware of what some hotels are thinking.
