The obvious option would be to make it a selectable perk, like every other airline. Taking it away completely isn't an enhancement. And it's even worse that they'll take away a benefit and not mention what could replace it.
I'm assuming it's more likely it got taken away due to negotiations with AA, and not with customer feedback in mind.
