I have seen lots of "random" passport checks at internal Schengen borders, including French borders (performed by French border police). To the trained eye, there seems to be a pattern to this randomness.

A clear example is a recent flight from OTP to CDG, which took place after Romania entered the air Schengen space. French border officers met the flight at CDG and were checking passports as passengers entered the terminal.
