Breaking ranks a bit, if you get a later flight and you sleep on it (which is likely in club suites), you can quite easily stay awake in an airport in the US. In fact you'll likely wake up very early even in a hotel and not get a lot of sleep, so all you've really gained for what is usually a lot of money in NY is a shower and a period in bed wondering if you'll get back to sleep and what time you should head back to the airport.

Bear in mind that without GE it may take quite a while to get through passport control. You could easily be 11.30 to midnight before you're in a hotel anyway.

I'm not sure how I'd do this - given the main event is the next day I'd likely build in a buffer for a good sleep before the domestic, or I'd stay in the final destination overnight before the wedding and sleep there (on the basis the hotels may be cheaper).
