Actually I haven't had a low A gate for an EDI/GLA in a while. Have had a few A10's and also a B. Whilst the low As more often than not will be the arrival gate for Domestics. The same cannot be said for Departures as this very much depends on where the aircraft will arrive from. Of my last 5 would say 2 x A10, A11/12 (terrible position to board from and A21 - great location for GF.
It did used to be the case in the mid 2010's that it would more likely than not be A1-5 but that has changed. Many a Friday evening in the pre status days sat at the spoons at that end of T5.
Agreed it's far less common than once was the case, when a low numbered A gate was a reliable rule-of-thumb. My most recent GLA was from A3, but agree with you that the low/mid teen gates feature more often than once did. Interestingly, my experience is almost the opposite of yours, where I've been far more 'unlucky' with domestic arrivals than with departures over the past couple of years - often ending up either at the remote stands to the south of the A building, the remote stands between T5C and T3, or an arrival at A11-15 requiring disembarking from the rear and on to a short bus trip round to domestic arrivals.
