Airlines do this all the time - the question is whether revenue management have correctly predicted how many no-shows, cancellations and or misconnects will occur in the next twelve days. Even if they haven't they may not pick you to offload as opposed to someone else, and as mentioned they have F seats to play with on OpUps, Upgrade instruments or tempting someone into a paid upgrade. They're still willing to sell seats:
