I either was or am high tier (ie top or second from top like ALL Plat) on various hotel programmes (Hilton, Accor, Marriott, Intercontinental, Hyatt, Shangri La, etc). I certainly wouldn't consider ALL the worst of the lot.
Most of my alternate and recent/current experience is as Plat with Marriott, which is my 3rd most frequented chain (beyond Fairmont and Four Seasons). I find them to be leaps and bounds above ALL when it comes to actually honouring published benefits. If you read through past posts on this forum, it's like it's some sort of contest for ALL hotels to do everything they can to weasel out of providing things. I just never run into that with Marriott. And the ALL program is so full of exceptions, based on brand, country or region, or often just specific hotels, so often the published benefits just don't apply so the hotels don't even need to try to weasel out of them. I don't see the same amount of exceptions with Marriott. Getting breakfast everywhere is nice. I suppose if you travel with Accor in APAC (which I don't), then you might get that breakfast benefit with ALL, but everywhere else, you don't get fed.
I had good experiences with Hilton, but I haven't stayed there in a while, so maybe it's gone downhill in recent years.
And then there is the ALL SNU program. Looks OK on paper, until you dig into the details, and see the number of hotels that don't participate. And then when you see the ones that do (which is declining every day), the value is often poor or negative. Hotels often have a discount of some sort (whether standing like auto club, seniors, etc. or just a seasonal promotion), but those promotions don't stack with SNUs. I can usually book a suite cheaper straight off the website using one of several available discounts than I can with the SNU. You have to really look for a rare sweet spot where there is good value. I currently have 28 SNUs sitting around waiting to be redeemed. On the past 6 bookings I've made in recent months, I've been unable to redeem one, due to the hotel not participating, or the value of the SNU being negative.
