It was cycling thru both errors even with/without using the ticket number. I did not call first. I think it's just something to do with the United system. I'd get the paid booking class error first and then the not available error after.
But the same upgrade cleared on ANA without any errors or issues? I just want to be clear before I transfer a bucketload of points from Amex to ANA just to clear upgrades on BR. I can't even use the ANA system to check for availability before moving the points.
