It's not all that painful, although some people do complain about the time it takes for the Avios and cash to be refunded. Apparently now you also have to pay the cancellation fee in advance, rather than just having it netting off against the refund.
Yes, that's right, you have to pay the cancellation fee in advance. I find you always get through very quickly, usually immediately, but to cancel a flight takes about 20 mins as they constantly put you on hold. And quite often you get cut off, this week I had to cancel two flights and so far I have done one of the two, and have called six times with varying degrees of success in terms of when I was cut off. (I'm just going to place the call on hold, and then you're cut off).
