A GGL agent explained they now get a screen alert that the award must be booked into award A class and not A revenue class. She said when they first started a lot of GUFs were booked into revenue A class by mistake.
So I presume lack of availability is the new normal.
This resonates with my experiences also. Luckily I have only one set of flights not upgraded in the next few months as I booked the balance before the pop-up arrived.
