was Y. Given the fault was specifically related to the inability to recline, surely this is still the closest comparator class of travel given it has the least recline on-board, regardless of the seat width or padding?

True. Could be worth a shout that given the injury-related motivation for purpose (so long as this can be substantiated with documentation etc.) but unlikely to pass muster with BA I'd imagine. Logical solution would've been an on-board downgrade to J, refund of the upgrade cost and compensation for the inconvenience. Sadly doesn't sound like that was an option here.

I’m not sure if this has been asked, but I do wonder whether OP paid for an AUP into a seat that shouldn’t have been sold. Maybe a checkin agent missed a note - not entirely sure how it works on FLY.
Not sure what others think but I'd have preferred this - I'd obviously be peeved that my excitement at snagging an F upgrade (admittedly, not for that price in my personal financial circumstances!) was for nothing, but I'd rather a functioning J seat than the nuisance that is the alternative experienced by the OP. Taking this specific instance in isolation, the former might end up costing BA less than the latter, anyway.
