It is my argument that it is very obvious that AS knows they could have intermediate values above 1500 miles for Asia Pacific before leaping to 50k on a o/w redemption in J in APAC or EMEA, since they do in another chart.

However, it's also very obvious that an airline based in North America flying narrowbodies probably doesn't have a lot of customers redeeming SIN-NRT (and we know historically the Asia region has been a "loophole" for mileage brokers or travel hackers using AS's janky website and advantageous charts). I assume they don't want a bunch of QR Qsuites EU-ME redemptions at low mileage either.

It'll probably hurt their mileage sales, but they've quite intentionally done what they've done (and they could easily change the chart if impacts their bottom line, I suspect they won't because it won't). Their program is pretty broadly "meh", with the advantage over AV of much less punitive cancel/change rates, the advantage over AC of actually having people you can get to on the phone, and some built in one way stopovers, and the major disadvantage of no transfer partners beyond Marriott, Bilt and Diner's Club (for the six dinosaurs who still have that), plus some unique options like DE, FI and JX that you aren't available elsewhere all together (options that I might add are pretty useful for a North American based airline). They have largely eliminated the good stuff like USA-Hong Kong-South Africa in F for a song and left a chart with some major downsides (you should use someone else for midrange point to point in EMEA/APAC, fortunately you have options if you're a points buyer or card churner). Nobody seriously disputes it's a devaluation overall.

The thread's track is discussion of the changes. They aren't all the way done yet because we have multi-partner coming later this year.

UK APD can be avoided going ex-EU or from BFS and INV.

Oh, and AA has some TATL J to LHR these days. If that's your thing.

Oh, and:

https://www.alaskaair.com/content/mi...global-escapes

"Global escapes pricing is offered on flights in Economy & Premium Economy class only. Travel has to originate in the US."

Oh hey, once again they're not really concerned about their user base in APAC concerned about J midhaul redemptions...
Note that it appears that the ORD to LHR route for awards is the one that arrives after 10PM; meaning that you have to spend the night in London if your destination is elsewhere. Not a bad deal if you are time flexible and value the lie flat seats. You could always book this in advance and predict that AA makes a change to the flight schedule - allowing you to move to the preferred ORD to LHR overnight without incurring a change fee.
