I'd say the OP is being very reasonable in expecting a refund of the difference between a Y fare and the F price he paid.
I think he is asking for the difference between J and F which is even more reasonable. Sometimes a business has to put its hand in its pocket when it fails to deliver. If this goes all the way to a court I'd be interested to see the outcome.
