You are correct, award tickets are not eligible for free STPC. You should be able to use AS for the duration of the stopover but sleeping facilities within the lounge are limited and usually very busy at that time. And yes the Oryx airside is expensive
However, with a 12+ hour transit, if your ticket was issued by QR (ie. the ticket number starts with 157-) you would be eligible to book the discounted hotels through Discover Qatar:

Prices are from USD 14 per person in a 4 star, USD 23 per person in a 5 star. Personally I would book one of those.
