I appreciate that there is a point about fleet flexibility but having a small midhaul fleet of A321s NEOs with 2-2 business seating to serve CAI, TLV, AMM and perhaps other near-LH destinations such as IST would surely make sense. Price premium can be charged for a long haul product but on a SH aircraft.
The argument against that is the headache that is operating a small sub-fleet to serve a very limited number of destinations. BA tried that, and binned it. BA is quite happy having the A21Ns on CAI (and now TLV) because they offer great flexibility in terms of the size of the J cabin. Perhaps TLV will get widebodies back, perhaps they won't. Stay tuned. But I'd be confident that a new sub-fleet is not on the horizon.
