The second ticket will trigger a warning, but as long as you go in to refund the original ticket immediately after the award tickets, you'll be fine.

Note that UA may consider it a violation of the contract of carriage if you are regularly doing this. In general, reserving space with a refundable ticket is a no-no, although in this particular case I don't think it's a problem, assuming you were planning to travel on the paid ticket if an award hadn't opened.
