I've seen people do that, and 9 times out of 10 it's all fine and dandy and they save plenty of cash, but there's the other option when the ticket inspector gets his knickers in a twist and issues a fine.
LapLap personally I'd break the ticket only if you are OK with having an argument, possibly in Italian, with the train inspector. Another option is to fly to Linate, it's just a metro ride away from the city.
As explained, the intention is to get a train to Ferno, get off, get out with our tickets logged/stamped. Only then would we commence the new journey with Ferno to MXP tickets.
We’ll probably get an ice cream, there’s a very appealing gelateria just 8 mins walk away. We will be travelling without much luggage and I’m genuinely curious to see what the area around Ferno station is like. It’s not a place I’d ordinarily go to and I generally appreciate it when unexpected circumstances lead me to have experiences I wouldn’t actively choose. As someone who doesn’t drive, I find I have to make a conscientious effort to see some of the suburbs of the cities and towns I visit as a tourist.
ETA - Osteria San Martino has a menu completo option on the menu del giorno for €13, looks perfect!
ETAA - just noticed your Linate advice
We’re travelling during the U.K. School Half Term holidays and I’ve managed to squeeze in a “free” trip to Milan because the price of getting back to London from here is (including both rail fares) the same as returning from Venice.
Yes, there is a flight from Linate but it’s twice the price.
I don’t get frustrated by what I can’t afford, I lean into and make the most of what I can afford. Our biggest luxury on this trip is this wonderful opportunity to bring my daughter’s delightful friend with us. Am still pinching myself that we can all visit the Pinacoteca di Brera together.
I’m glad we can see some of Ferno, I thought it might be a bit industrial, but it looks lovely.
Oh yes, one can’t dismiss the photo opportunities for two teenagers being “In Ferno”. And won’t be the first time, my kid’s already been dragged to HEL as a way to get to Alicante
