I replaced a (Shanghai number) Unicom SIM in Shenzhen a few years ago and the process was much easier than I was expecting.

Before I went into the store, I did pita assessment of migrating to a new number if that turned out to be the path of least resistance, and determined it wouldn't be that bad (e.g. mainly just need to update a handful of accounts).
