I feel like those who say the credit is hard to use either don't have this card or are doing things wrong. Applying the credits is basically a 3-5 minute phone call. There are many cards where I might be tempted to lower the face value of the credits because of breakage. This card isn't one of them.

If your goal is to get as much back on the annual fee from the Boundless it does make sense to upgrade as close as possible after your first anniversary date.

Things are a bit more complicated if say you wake up mid-year and you want to upgrade to trigger the 85k certificate (this is if you've held the card for over 12 months) or are timing the upgrade until after you receive some elite nights linked to spend thresholds from your Boundless (which isn't offered with the Ritz).
