Bulgaria and Romania in Schengen - what changes?
Hi everyone,
With Bulgaria and Romania now part of the Schengen space (for air travel), I assume that passengers traveling between these countries and the US would have to clear passport control at the connecting airport in Central Europe. (I assume the connecting airport is FRA, AMS, CDG, MUH, etc.) Previously, passports were checked on arrival/departure in Bucharest and Sofia but not at the connecting airport. Now, the flight from Bucharest or Sofia to the Central European gateway is an intra-Schengen flight, so passport control should be shifted to these connecting airports.
Thus, one unintended consequence of what is otherwise good news for these two countries is that additional time would be required to make connections to/from the US and other western non-Schengen destinations.
Is my analysis correct?
