Yes, I'm afraid status seat selection benefits are only available to those who are flying in the same cabin and on the same booking, unless you are Gold and have done a "To Complete Party" action, but even then it only works if they are in the same cabin, albeit they could be on separate bookings. Obviously if they are in CE they will be able to go into the lounge and you will be able to guest someone else (I am thinking that might have been why you made the change?). The reality is that the telephone agent may not have realised that they would lose the ability to select seats.
