Not really. In tune with what the government might have us believe about cultural sensitivity there, perhaps. The fact that it feels so wrong to Turkish customers, as hfly says, indicates where the problem lies. If it is not someone at BA HQ conflating Turkey with the rest of the Middle East, it is likely to be some misguided requirement of Turkish petty officialdom.

As for the HQ or crew not knowing the difference, well this is what happens in general when we employ the cheapest people, rather than the best or most experienced.
