What is the purpose of gifting someone 2P? The only one I can is that they can secure E+ for a year. If they fly a lot, then they'll get 2P on their own very soon. If they don't then they won't requalify, so again, just a year of E+. For someone that doesn't fly a lot (i.e. my wife) they'll never earn any 500-milers.
So what is the point?

John Doe, who never flies, will very much appreciate an expedite check-in experience with a golden boarding pass followed by having its way expedited through security. Instead of being at the back of the bus he'll be sit at the front of the plane and, alas, lots of leg room, without being charged additionally for the priviledge. To top it off he'll now be among the first to get into the plane.
Last but not least, once that flight posts he'll notice a 25% bonus !!!
I do understand that for a 1K that's not enough, but for every one else that's a lot !!!
