I am glad you mentioned this, because it is important to look at the data.

The enclosed data show that the 737MAX has a higher fatal hull loss rate than the DC-10.

I think this is worth repeating: the data suggest that B737MAX is more dangerous than the DC-10!

This is a statistic that should give UA pause before continuing to invest in that aircraft.

Aircraft accident rates

ln contrast, the fatal hull loss rate for the following types of (recent) foreign-built aircraft is either zero or negligibly small:

A321/320/319neo (France)
C series (Canada)
A350 (France)
A380 (France)
E17x/E19x (Brazil)
CRJ series (Canada/Japan)

Yes, there are a few American-built planes on that list of safe aircraft, such as the classic B737 series (non-MAX), B717 (ex MD-90), B747-800, but these are not being built anymore. The only remaining "safe" Boeing planes that are still being built are the 777 and 787.

Overall, a brief examination of the data suggests that Boeing is now less safe than its foreign competitors, primarily due to the MAX debacle.

Thus, the "feeling" of being safer in a foreign-manufactured aircraft (compared to Boeing) is not based on irrationality but rather on statistics.

The most striking contrast is the difference in accident rates between the A3xx neo and the B737 MAX. It is this difference, in particular, that makes me sad. Because, as an American, I want Boeing to be the best. I don't want the 737MAX to become like the Sukhoi 100.

Therefore,

I urge UA to pivot to Airbus until Boeing returns to the safety record to which we had been accustomed before the MAX debacle.
