On this point, they last had a 50% off Avios sale around Black Friday (I know as I bought flights to JFK then – just as I have now). So maybe more than once a year, but when exactly they drop seems hard to say outside of expected sale dates like Black Friday (and even then who's to say they'll do an Avios sale vs a revenue fare sale).
Last year they run the promo twice, or at least I was targeted twice, although I am not sure if I received the mails announcing it.
In this occasion, I have not received any mail and learnt about the promo @ FT, but when I tried to make a booking, it showed the normal amount of miles.
