I presume this is because there would be an airport change in NYC (it's a 12 hour connection though). Is there any way to force that award other than booking multi-city and paying separately for the segments?
I'm finding lately the only way to book an AA award with a connection is to do it via Multi-City. First leg would be STL-LGA, and second leg JFK-FCO. It shouldn't charge you the individual fares. It'll come out to be the NA-Europe fare, likely 30K (Y) or 57.5 (J). I just tried this for some dates mid-May and it worked.

It also works if you book arriving into NYC a day before.
