In my case I have some DPs but no explanation. I earned President's Club back in July of last year. This year I posted in January wondering what would happen to that status. On Feb 28, I received an email from AA saying "Confirming your Loyalty Point Reward" and "You unlocked Avis Preferred PlusŪ status". It also says my status is valid through the AAdvantage Status membership year. (It turns out the original message saying I had President's Club has that same language about the AAdvantage status membership year).
So that would lead me to believe that they evaluated my status based on what I spent with them last year and downgraded me from President's Club to Preferred Plus on March 1. That would be reasonable and would make sense.
But on my Avis profile, it still shows President's Club, and it appears I still have those benefits though I haven't rented a car since the day of that message (returned on the 28th of Feb). But it still shows all the President's Club badging on my profile so I assume that's what I still have. It just doesn't make sense in light of that email on Feb 28 saying I'd unlocked Preferred Plus.
So one thing I did find on Avis's site is that the Avis Preferred program reviews each member in January and if you get lowered, it's only one tier (for example, if you were presidents circle, you lower to Preferred Plus.) BUT... as we know with credit card gifted status, getting downgraded is often like parachute failure. STILL... your DP is encouraging. I think I will try it out and see if they retain me through next January. I had a near miss of a terrible experience with Hertz this year (but many good experiences in the past, to be fair). I am ready to try something else.
