While I don't have any data points to make any claims about upgrades as a Hilton Gold (as a Diamond, I can count the number of actual suite upgrades on one hand - even in Asia) - equating Hilton Gold (which provides free breakfast) to Marriott Gold (which does not) is always going to be a losing equation for Marriott.
I got multiple upgrades to suites as a Hilton Gold (Conrad Macau and Hilton LAX being notable) before the current stretch as a Diamond; my Hilton suite upgrades don't fit on one hand any more, but it's certainly not as good as what I batting as Marriott Platinum/Titanium (though I'm not close to batting 1.000 there either).
I wouldn't be shocked based on that if Marriott Gold is a pretty underwhelming experience (much like Hyatt Explorist as mentioned upthread).
