Given that VX was a significant (some would say) part of SFO's history, it really isn't too surprising that the museum is doing an exhibit about them.
Airlines (and airliners) have a bit of a life after death, but that's not that unusual. Cars and car manufacturers also have a following after death. No one cares about defunct toilet paper makers, but there probably aren't any memories associated with TP while people still remember fondly their first car, their first trip to Europe on TWA, etc. etc.
Where it gets weird (IMHO) is when people try to re-use the names of dead airlines for something unrelated. The various re-incarnation attempts of PanAm come to mind. Or Eastern Airlines. That seems like a waste of money - it's easy enough to come up with a brand-new name for free... such as Northern Pacific Airlines (*cough*).
