Book future travel for yourself. When you find out you can't go on that trip, continue to change the trip to a different one. If you change a flight to a cheaper one and the credit that was used expired, then you won't get anything back. If you keep changing to a new flight that's more than your original credit, you could keep extending it that way. Always use the change function and don't cancel.
