Your son should be covered if he's "legally dependent" (assume that means you claim him as a dependent on your tax returns, but I doubt they will request copies of your tax returns).
Keep in mind that the flight must have been cancelled for one of the covered reasons (equipment failure, inclement weather, strike, or hijacking/skyjacking), and the documentation you get from the airline for the delay must state the reason.
