If the fare rules require a roundtrip, it’s unlikely there will be any residual value from the cancelled return.
Which is why I said "another US>Europe segment". There will definitely be residual value if you try to rebook a similar return segment from the US to Europe. There won't be any residual value if you try to rebook anything else.
