I'm guessing when you try to do the $20 tip trick, your status doesn't matter much.
I never care enough about my room in Vegas to try the trick (I'm usually staying a night), but I have noticed that I don't get meaningful upgrades at the Caesar's properties with my status. I've always assumed they're for real gamblers. Oddly, the nicest rooms I've had in Vegas have been status-less and random. Like showing up late when the only rooms left are the nice suites.
