The one-way fares are crazy so booking two one ways isn't doable. The round trip fare is less than half the one way.

I wouldn't bother with canceling, just don't show up. Also consider booking a flexible fare with return far out in the future. Then, you might possibly be able to use it, albeit after paying some fare difference.
