At most, it is one stopover.
But if there is 24hrs or less between arrival and departure, then it is just a transit.

LAX -> xDFW -> SCL
SCL -> xDFW -> BUR
BUR -> LAX (surface segment)

Does it count as 2 stopovers or 3 stopovers?
Does it count as 5 segments or 4 segments?

My guess is 5 segments and 2 stopovers. I would like to check with everyone
