Called Etihad, agent had no idea why, suggested that I had documents that needed checking at the airport.

My trip is MEL-LHR so two legs via AUH, the above was when checking in at first opportunity, but at that time the 2nd leg was not available for checking as departure is 17hrs after the first leg.
Tried again today, both legs available for check in and seat selection, no issues this time.
