England, specifically Bradford but I think they were universal. It was quite common as a child to nip into a shoe store and wriggle your toes even without trying on shoes. The machines were fluoroscopes so it was quite a good dose of radiation. This was 70 years ago.
When I was a boy, a kid in my class had his foot broken in a malfunctioning one. The motorised bit that came against the heel didn’t stop and crushed his little trotter. We were all gutted as he was our star winger on the rugby team and we went from being unbeaten to a very average season.
His parents, who like most of the parents at the school, didn’t have a lot of money but got a very flash new car about six months later.
