It turns out that this is how their idiotic system is "supposed" to work; if you want to keep using AMC after cancelling an ANA credit card, you have to call ANA (note: 45 minute hold time as of right now) and get a new mileage account set up and then have everything transferred over. Whether this can be done after cancelling the credit card, I don't know. Maybe I will find out next week if the hold times are less ridiculous.
I think this might only happen if you created the account along with the credit card. I already had an account and when I opened a card I got a new number (and had to manually switch to using my old number as my “main number”). I can see that if you closed the card the ANA number might be linked as well and if you had nothing to fall back to you lose the entire account. Just a guess tho
