What I love about FT is that there are LOTS of different views on any particular subject. So to clarify… I want them to mainly go inside my bag, (but occasionally outside).
Since I have airtags inside my bags I pretty much always know where they are, but having the BA tags inside help if they go seriously AWOL and someone needs to open them to redirect them back to me.
Having said all that… what I am really more concerned about is that lack of ability to order them online… since others seem to be able to do so… I sometimes wonder whether some of the IT ‘enhancements’ that BA do are aimed at yours truly.
Slightly OT but I think airtags are much more useless then gold tags. All airtags do is let you know faster that your bags didn't make it, something you'll find out 10 minutes later at baggage claim. I've never heard of an airline "searching" for a lost bag based on its location from it's airtags. Correct me if I'm wrong but I just don't see the point.
Back to the gold tags, since I started using them I've never had a bag gate checked. This also includes on other airlines, perhaps they recognised it or perhaps they confused it for their own. In any case I went from gate checking 2/3 times a year to zero.
Additionally, it can help at outstations. I once had a problem where my status didn't appear on the boarding pass but I was allowed fast track/lounge access based on the tag. In this case the app card probably would've sufficed but it certainly doesn't take away from the physical tag.
