If there is a cheap one-way to Europe with upgrade availability, there will probably also be saver awards in AA J, in which case you should probably be choosing the miles as rewards instead of the SWUs anyway.

It sounds like the best use of SWUs will be last minute availability to Asia, if any, or just take the miles....
