The Maldives has some nice enough reefs and can be a good place to see whale sharks and mantas, but I’ve never heard it referred to in the same vein as French Polynesia. Go visit Fakarava, to name just one hotspot.
Fakarava is well known for it's large pelagic life. The reefs 15-20 minutes from the Conrad Maldives are incredibly health and full of life. One of them is an extremely popular site that many liveaboards stop at.
