Thanks to everyone for your input. I am hoping that I can get the boarding pass on the App 24 hours before. Good to know that the transfer desk at least has a phone if I have any issues. I guess the worst case is that I go thru immigration (I won't need a Visa ahead of time being a US citizen) if I cannot get a boarding pass with online check in. From what I have seen online, immigration is pretty efficient so I should have plenty of time to check-in at the Cathay counter if necessary.
