I agree. It's ridiculously complicated. It takes so much time and energy to understand it that I would think the complexity would dissuade many otherwise interested people from trying the program. Not a very good way to encourage loyalty (or whatever it is that JAL is trying to encourage.)
It could be a lot worse. Lufthansa rolled out their new program and they have 3 types of elite-qualifying "currencies": Points, Qualifying Points, and HON Circle Points. That's in addition to miles, which are for redemption.
Then again, if people already understand the idea of JGC (ie, an elite program within an elite program), this shouldn't be too hard.
