As I said it was hypothetical and my scenario is exactly possible under the rules everyone is evangelizing. The real issue is there is a limit to how many can fit in a rental car, even the biggest they have.
The car issue is also dependent on the size and shape of the bag. There are times when 4 small bags fit better than 2 big bags (pretty sure someone mentioned this upthread). The airline doesn't really care about your car problem. They only care about their constraints.
